Youth Achievement Awards

*With 100% more love than the next leading youth peer led group*

The Youth Achievement Award Scheme is run on a Monday evening and membership is covered by the same subsciption paid to the Woodcraft Folk for the regular Friday night club. It is classed as 'informal' learning and, although there is a structure to it, it is preferred by many children to school work. There are no text books and no 'teachers' as such.

There are four levels that can be completed in any order. These are Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The Bronze award requires young people to take part in groups in four challenges of 15 hours each with the assistance of a youth worker.

The Silver award requires young people to take an active role in planning and completing another four challenges of 15 hours each, still with the assistance of a youth worker but to a lesser degree. This is usually done in pairs.

The Gold award requires young people to lead the activities and this time there are 6 challenges of 15 hours each. The youth workers role is now that of mentor and advisor on health and safety and similar issues.

The Platinum award requires young people to plan and lead the activities which can consist of 6 challenges of 15 hours each, 3 of 30 hours each or a personal development plan.

The challenges are chosen from three main categories; Interests, Concerns and Your Future.

Interests can include; Sports and Recreation; Creative and Performing Arts; Outdoor Adventure.

Concerns can include; Health; Relationships; Rights and Responsibilities; The Environment; Action in your Community; The International Community.

Your Future can include; Independant Living; Being a Parent; Managing Money; Skills you want to Learn; Skills you want to Share; Information Technology; Enterprise or Making a Living.

The current attendance at the Youth Achievement Award Scheme is around 12 or 13. The Youth Achievement Award Scheme is about socializing and learning at the same time. Activities are organised to involve the members taking part and completing a minimum of 15 hours per activity.

On this page there are pictures of activities that we have all taken part in; some national, some international.

Some of the activities that have been organised over the last year are:

Tall Ships Race: Two people from our group have participated in this event in 2005 organised by Youth Clubs Hampshire and Isle of Wight. They started out from Southampton and went to Ireland and France. The previous year was a trip to Denmark.
Running a Fairtrade Cafe at the Liss Triangle Centre. This was a very successful evening with a lot of the parents staying to sample all of the food and drinks on offer. Fairtrade is a way of ensuring that the people who grow and produce these goods get a fair price for their work.

First Aid and Casualty Simulation Course:

The detailed and gory pictures on the right are faked, may I say (still cool though).

Helping out at the Elfins group on a Friday night as part of the Foundation level of the Playworker Course.

Sponsored Walks:

We have so far organised two very successful sponsored walks at Marwell Zoo for Tigers and Orang-utans.

These are just a few of the things we do. To join us, click here.
