The Woodcraft Folk is an educational movement for children and young people, both girls and boys, which aims to develop self confidence and activity in society, with the aim of building a world based on equality, friendship, peace and co-operation. We have groups all over the UK and also have links with similar groups in other countries allowing us to focus on international issues such as the worldwide environment, world debt and global conflict. Contrary to the myths that surround the ‘Woodcraft’ name, under normal circumstances the Woodcraft Folk do not ‘hug trees’ or ‘craft from wood’. The term ‘woodcraft’ comes from the influential writer and naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton at the turn of the twentieth century. Woodcraft in this context meant the skill of living in the open air, close to nature. We are co-operative.

We encourage children and young people to work together to share their skills and enthusiasm.

We believe in equal opportunities and access for all members.

We are open to people of any religion or none.

We empower young people to make decisions for themselves and take an active part in the world about them.

We are dedicated to the building of a more peaceful future.

We promote an understanding of the need to protect our environment and the use of the world’s resources.

We run exchanges with similar organisations across the world helping us to ‘Span the World with Friendship’

The Woodcraft Folk was established as an educational movement and charity in 1925 as an alternative to the Scouts, and was run entirely by young people, with 19-year-old Leslie Paul as its original leader. The organisation has become a forward thinking youth organisation continuously changing with the times.

The Woodcraft Folk is a registered charity No. 1073665
